When the last ball was caught, Mike wasn’t there. She looked around for him before hugging her neighbors and acquaintances, but she didn’t see him anywhere. A few minutes later, he came out of their house and cut across the lawn. “Congratulations,” he said, giving her a hug.

Many months later, Jane realized that he must’ve been inside talking to someone else. There would be so many memories like this ruined by Mike, times she thought they were good and happy when he was really just pining for his mistress. But Jane refused to let this memory go. She built a fence around it in her head, remembered only what she wanted to from that night: her neighbors screaming and hugging, people drinking cans of Old Style in Colleen’s fancy backyard, the way they all sang “Go, Cubs, Go” during the rain delay, their voices loud and wobbly with beer.

The Cubs had finally done it and Jane felt light-headed and tingly everywhere. Had she ever really believed it would happen? She didn’t think it would feel like this, out of body and unreal. It was like Santa Claus walking across your bedroom, like aliens landing in your yard, and she couldn’t help crying. It had actually happened. The Cubs had won.
